Charles W Benning

Charles Benning, 97, departed this life Saturday, January 9, 2021.  He was born May 18, 1923, to the union of Chester Benning and Helen Cassette. There were three brothers Chester, Andrew, and Donny: three sisters, Margette and Margarite.  One son and daughter, Butch and Pat, who preceded him in death. Charles wanted to fight for his country at the age of 17 he dropped out of school to join the military only to be turned down because he was black, however, three months later he was drafted, he served in World War II. He was stationed in several countries, including Germany and France. As an African American in the United States military, he endured verbal abuse and was mistreated. Upon returning to the United States, he met and married Vera Berry and they had three children, Pat, Butch, and Danny. He later married Ernestine Hines and was instrumental in raising his son, Vernon Hines. He was a member of Central Chapel A.M.E. Church, attended Church school, Bible Study, and was elected as a Trustee, served faithfully, and played a major role in the completion of the Family Life Center. A precious moment in his life was receiving his High School diploma on May 25, 2015, at the age of 92. He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Danny (Denise) Benning and Vernon (Susan) Hines, three granddaughters, Bunnie and Darnelle Benning, Tracie Steele, four grandsons; Sean and Ronald Jenkins, Travis Hines, and Derrick Benning. Ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson that he was crazy about and loved to tell people he was blessed to see his fifth generation. We brought nothing into this world, and we can certainly carry nothing out. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. 1 Timothy 6:7 & Job 1:21
